Lazy Lion’s languid expressive art works conjure up visions of a slower, gentler life. Isn’t that something we all want for our kids and ourselves? That’s how we knew Lazy Lion would be a great match for Chalk and Chakras’ yoga mats.

Chalk and Chakras and Lazy Lion poured over ideas together; we brainstormed for concepts; we dreamt up characters, prints, colours and stories before Lazy Lion brought them to life in her signature whimsical style.

Let’s find out more about Lazy Lion by speaking to Anusha Krishnamoorthy, the creative force behind the name.

How did you get started on being an illustrator and what drew you to it?

I’ve always found it fascinating how we all, consciously or not, express ourselves through the art and design of the things we choose to surround ourselves with. It was something I got more interested in over the years.

I started illustrating as an attempt at expressing my own inspirations outside of being a copywriter and magazine writer, which is what I do as a day job. Drawing lets me experiment on my own terms a bit more freely.

There’s this magical feeling when someone else chooses to express themselves through something I create, whether it’s buying my works, liking a picture I post [on Instagram], sharing it, feeling inspired by it.  It’s exciting that something I created has made someone else feel happy. This encourages me to keep illustrating.

So how do you hope kids will feel when they use the yoga mats with the illustrations you’ve created?

A comforting sense of wonder and self-expression.

Personally, what do you like most about the yoga mats?

The sense of whimsy and cuteness.  And how they each tell a story. [For more on Lazy Lion’s yoga mats, click here]

What do you do or turn to keep yourself calm and relaxed, especially when anxiety hits?

My dad used to say “just sing whenever you’re upset” and guess what, it works! Lately I’ve started meditating, which is helpful for feeling calmer in general. I love getting lost in something that lets me just ‘do without thinking’.

Usually it’s something creative like writing or drawing without any specific goal in mind; or just going for a long relaxing walk in a park or by the beach. A good piece of dark chocolate never hurts, too.

Lastly, why the name Lazy Lion? It’s so cute!

Cos it takes courage to be true to yourself and do what you love, but it’s also so easy to be lazy. It’s just a relatable combination. Ha!
