Easy family yoga poses for mums, dads and kids to try

We ran our second workshop earlier this month. Called Little Yogis Outdoors, the theme of our workshop was appreciating the great outdoors with our families, especially in this Covid year that has been tough for everyone.

We feel so lucky to hold this family yoga session at Faber Peak with Teacher June of Joyful Blossom Yoga Dance. It was great to see our workshop participants having fun getting into poses. As part of the workshop, we tried family yoga poses too that you can easily do at home with your kids.

Don’t forget that while there are many good reasons for kids to do yoga, the main point of family yoga is it serves as a bonding session. Don’t fret it they’re doing it wrongly. Instead enjoy these moments with them and simply introduce them to the movements.

Now, here are 5 best poses to get started for family yoga.

1. Double Boat Pose

This seated post is not only great for working the core, you get to pull and push as much as you want. Come close together to join hands and feet. Keep your knees bent so the position is comfortable for both of you. If you feel your child is ready to level up, encourage them to slowly lift their legs up to straighten them, while keeping feet still joined to yours.

2. Double Tree Pose

What’s some nature-inspired yoga without a tree pose? This partner / family version is fun and cute cos of the wobbling and height difference. This balancing pose helps with focus. Give your kids an added challenge: bonus points and cuddles if they manage to stay steady or not giggle.

3. Double Rainbow Pose

This is a nice, big stretching pose. And trust us, doing this with your child will give you a fuller stretch as you reach out to take their little hands. With one knee on the mat, drop down your hand on the same side (make sure your joints and hands are well-supposed by a cushioned mat). Next, stretch your other hand upwards first and extend your other leg out as well. When you’re both comfortable pull your stretched out arm over your ear to hold your child’s hand.

4. Modified Cat and Plank Pose

Your child will love being supported by you in this pose. Demonstrate a plank pose to your child first. Then get into a simple table-top or low cat pose. Ask your child to get into the plank pose then lift up their legs one after the other to rest them on your back. Make sure you’re close enough to each other for your child’s legs to reach your back easily.

5. Double Basket / Bow Pose

Kids Partner Yoga Pose

This one’s going to work your core while giving your child a nice piggy ride. Lay flat on your belly on your mat and invite your child to climb onto you. Once you both feel steady, bend your knees and reach for your the outside of each ankle with your arms. Keep your feet up toward the sky, lifting your heart and your thighs off the floor if you can. Breathe in and out while holding this position and looking straight ahead.

Hope these poses will inspire you to try them with your kids! If you’ve two or more kids at home, you can get them to try these poses together without you too.

Big thanks to our participants for being there with us and kindly allowing us to share their wonderful photos here. A special thank you goes out to 1004 Photography and venue partner One Faber Group for the space outside Arbora cafe to hold Little Yogis Outdoors.
